Boy nearly drowns in Tempe Lake

Mar. 3, 2007

A 17-month-old boy was in critical condition Saturday after being pulled from a lake at Kiwanis Park in Tempe.

Sgt. Mike Horn said little Salvador Duenas was attending a birthday party at the park when he wandered from the group shortly after 6:30 p.m.

His mother later found the boy about 90 feet away, his shoes sticking out from the lake water, Horn said. Authorities estimate the boy had been submerged between 3 and 5 minutes in an area of the lake that was about two feet deep.
