A 2 1/2-year-old Mesa boy died Saturday after being pulled from a neighbor's backyard swimming pool, marking the city's first drowning of the year.
Christopher Butler of the 1500 block of North Seton Street was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Joe Quintanares, a Mesa fire Captain.
Both the neighbor's yard and pool are fenced, he said. Investigators are trying to determine if a gate was left open or if the child may have squeezed through the bars of the fence.
The boy's mother discovered the child missing, then called police, Quintanares said. The child was spotted in the pool from a police helicopter.
