A toddler is in critical condition after nearly drowning in a bathtub Sunday while his mother was sleeping in the other room.
The 1-year-old boy was playing with his 3-year-old sister in a few inches of water in the tub when the boy ended up face down in the water, said Phoenix Fire Captain Hugh Chase.
The fire department arrived at the first-floor apartment, just off 7th Avenue south of Camelback, at about 11:45. The boy was rushed to St. Joe's hospital and has since moved to the intensive care unit, Chase said.
"There are positive signs. He has a pulse and he has pressure," he said. "They're still working on him and there's still hope."
How the children wound up in the tub with water in it while the mother was sleeping is among the questions police are investigating, Chase said.
