A 1-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool outside a Mesa home this morning.
Mesa Fire Department spokesman Thor Watson said family members had lost track of the boy for only a few minutes.
The child's father found him in the above ground swimming pool near Recker and McDowell roads, and began CPR right away, Watson said.
Fire crews also tried to revive the toddler, and he was rushed to Banner Baywood Medical Center but didn't survive. His name hasn't been released.
"People don't think about pool fences if it's an above ground pool," Watson said.
But those pools have ladders that lead right into the water, Watson said. The pool at the Mesa home was about 3½ feet deep.
People need to constantly watch children if water is around, the fire department spokesman said.
"It's a tragedy," Watson said. "No one wants to go through this."
