A 2-year-old boy is in the hospital Thursday after he was pulled out unresponsive from a backyard pool at a home in north Phoenix.
Firefighters responded to reports of a near drowning about 5:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Wagoner Road, south of Union Hills Road. When rescuers arrived, the boy was not breathing and had no pulse, Phoenix Fire Capt. Courtney Jenkins said. Firefighters were able to restore the toddler's pulse after performing CPR.
The boy's father told fire officials he lost track of his son and found him floating in the swimming pool. There was no fence around the pool, Jenkins said.
The child was airlifted to a hospital, where he was breathing with the help of a ventilator. The boy's condition was still unknown, and it will take 72 hours to determine any long-term effects, Jenkins said.
