A woman in her 80s was pronounced dead shortly after being found at the bottom of a backyard swimming pool in Surprise late Thursday morning, authorities said.
Surprise Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Pool said the unidentified woman was found in the pool by family members and was in grave condition when transported to Sun Health Del E. Webb Hospital.
Family members reported leaving their home in the 16700 block of Aberdeen Drive at about 8:30 a.m., leaving the woman home alone, Pool said. When they returned home at about 11 a.m., they could not immediately find her.
After searching the house, the victim's daughter-in-law found her at about 11:15 a.m. at the bottom of the pool along with her walker, Pool said.
Firefighters speculate that the elderly woman was walking around the pool with her walker, lost her balance and fell in.
The investigation is ongoing.
