A man saved his 4-year-old granddaughter from nearly drowning Sunday when he jumped into a family pool and pulled out the girl who was floating unconscious in the water, police report.
The grandfather performed CPR and the girl came to when rescue workers arrived at the house southeast of Guadalupe and Kyrene roads, said Sgt. Scott Smith, a Tempe police spokesman.
The parents noticed their daughter had been missing for only a minute or two, Smith said, when they found her in the backyard pool at about 11:45.a.m.
There is a fence around the pool, Smith said, but a family member had been doing some maintenance and the gate may not have been shut.
The girl was taken to a nearby hospital and appears to be doing well, Smith said.
