QUEEN CREEK - A 20-year-old man drowned Tuesday evening when his head got caught in a canal floodgate, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
Ivan Begay of Queen Creek was pronounced dead at the scene after friends tried unsuccessfully for several minutes to free him, the sheriff's office said.
Witnesses swimming in the canal, southeast of Schnepf and Ocotillo roads, said Begay attempted to stand beneath water spilling over the floodgate when the current pushed him below the surface, according to the sheriff's office.
An irrigation worker arrived shortly after they called for help and opened the gate, but Begay was unresponsive when they brought him to the surface, the sheriff's office said.
