Man nearly drowns; friends thought he was joking

September 22, 2008

SCOTTSDALE - A man nearly drowned Saturday after possibly hitting his head on a condominium pool, police said.

The 30-year-old man was unresponsive when he was pulled out of the pool by two friends, who had been swimming with him.

Police arrived and took the man to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn in critical condition.

The man and his friends were in the hot tub at the Maya Condominiums at 7625 E. Camelback Road when they went to cool down in the pool around 6 a.m., after drinking earlier that morning, police said.

The friends did not see the man hit his head and believed that he was trying to hold his breath under water, police said.

They pulled him out of the water a short time later, once they realized that he was not playing around, and he had not resurfaced, police said.
