One of the two children found floating face down in an East Valley pool last weekend has died, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
The Rural Metro Fire Department said 5-year-old Rachel Allen and her 2-year-old brother were found in the pool of a home near Ocotillo and Schnepf roads at about 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The children were airlifted to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.
Sunday morning, Lt. Tammy Villar of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said the 2-year-old boy was in stable condition.
Villar said the victims' parents were painting the inside of the home, which they had just moved into.
The father went outside for a short period of time and took the two children with him. He went back inside the house and called out to the children, but they did not respond, according to Villar.
Villar said that's when the father walked back outside and discovered the children in the pool. He pulled them out and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
A memorial fund has been set up at Desert Schools Credit Union to help the family with funeral expenses. Checks can be made out to the Rachel Allen Memorial Fund, account number 3000014923.
A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Simonton Elementary School in the Castlegate subdivision near Schnepf and Ocotillo roads.
