There was not a fence or barrier around the backyard pool where a 2-year-old boy was found Saturday, officials said.
The boy was listed in serious condition Sunday night, Scottsdale Fire Department spokeswoman Tiffani Nichols said.
Scottsdale and Tempe fire units responded to a reported drowning in the 1300 block of 87th Place in Scottsdale at about 12:45 p.m Saturday.
The caller had pulled the boy out of the pool and had begun CPR before fire units arrived. The boy was not breathing, but paramedics were able to get a pulse, Nichols said.
It was unknown how long he was in the water.
The mother and the son were the only people home at the time of the incident, Nichols said.
The Scottsdale Fire Department urged residents and visitors to always supervise children when around water, install barriers and get CPR and first aid certified.
