A 37-year-old old man is dead after reportedly chasing a runaway raft that had blown away in the high winds at Lake Mohave.

Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area say they received reports a little after 12:30 p.m. Sunday that the man had gone underwater.

Members of a diving class who were training nearby found the man about 40 feet underwater and brought him to the surface.

Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at an Arizona hospital a little after 1:30 p.m.

Officials with the National Park Service say winds were gusting nearly 20 mph at the time of the incident, and the man hadn’t been wearing a life jacket.

He was from Bullhead City, Ariz., but his name was not immediately released.

A 3-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being pulled from a West Phoenix pool.

Phoenix firefighters responded to the call at an apartment complex near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road around 4:30 p.m.

The girl was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in very critical condition, according to Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Mure.

Mure said a mother watching her two young sons was also babysitting the 3-year-old girl and none of the children were good swimmers.

The children were sharing two sets of “water wings” and at some point a fourth child came into the pool area to play with the little girl who was her friend.

Mure said the woman assumed the girl next to her two boys was the child she was babysitting and that she only saw the backs of their heads, not their faces.

The fourth child realized this was not her friend next to her and told the babysitter.

When she went to look for the 3-year-old, the woman found her at the bottom of the pool and screamed for help.

Mure said two adults from separate groups jumped in and pulled the girl from the pool and began CPR until paramedics arrived.

It is unknown how long the girl had been under water.

An 11-year-old boy boy died Wednesday after being pulled from an above-ground pool, according to police.

Sgt. Steve Martos, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, said emergency crews responded to a home around 2:40 p.m. near 107th Avenue and Buckeye in Tolleson, Ariz after the boy was pulled from the pool.

The boy was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he died, said Martos.

The 11-year-old has been identified as Ivan Nunez.

Preliminary information indicates that the boy was going swimming with his 10-year-old brother and entered the pool to remove the plastic cover.

Police said it is unknown if the boy became entangled in the cover, but remains under investigation.

The 10-year-old attempted to pull his brother from the pool, but couldn’t. His older brother, 15, had to help.

Phoenix fire said the boy’s father began providing CPR until paramedics arrived.

No other details were released.

A neighbor is credited with saving the life of a 3-year-old who nearly drowned in an apartment complex pool near 19th Avenue and Glendale early Friday morning.

According to reports, the child was heard splashing in the water around 3 a.m.

Edward Vara reportedly investigated the noise and jumped in to save the child when he realized what was happening.

Vara said he was outside his apartment looking at his phone.

“I heard a splash, I heard like someone dove into the pool, I thought it was awkward, I thought to myself, ‘it’s kind of late for someone to jump into the pool,’” he said.

He almost went back to what he was doing– but something didn’t feel right.

“When I looked over, I just seen him in the middle of the pool on his back, on the top of the water,” Vara said.

He couldn’t believe it.

“I was trying to tell myself, it wasn’t what I was seeing– but I knew it was. I knew a little boy was drowning,” he said.

With that, he sprang into action.

“I was getting ready to jump the fence, but the pool gate just went open. So I just ran in,” Vara said.

“I just jumped in, grabbed him, brought him up.. his body was hard, like he had swallowed a lot of water.”

He tried to do CPR.

“I was just screaming at the top of my lungs for anyone to come out and help me,” he said.

A neighbor came out and helped and they called 911. The three-year-old boy started breathing again.

“I really don’t feel like I did anything special. I did what anyone would’ve done I think,” he said.

If he hadn’t heard that splash, Vara knows it could’ve ended a lot differently.

“I just keep kind of replaying in my head, ‘wow, there was nobody out there.’ There was nobody there.”

The toddler’s parents don’t know how he got out of their apartment. Neighbors said the boy is doing fine.

Vara said the pool gate is usually locked.
