A 19-month old Gilbert girl pulled from her backyard swimming pool earlier this week was removed from life support and died Thursday, police said.

Shauna Teela died in an undisclosed Valley hospital, said Sgt. Bill Balafas, a Gilbert police spokesman.

Gilbert fire officials said the girl’s parents called 911 about 1 p.m. Tuesday, after they noticed the young girl was unresponsive in their pool near Val Vista Drive and Elliot Road.

The girl was pulled from the water, but didn’t have a pulse and was not breathing. After several minutes of CPR, she regained a pulse at the hospital.

Police are still investigating the incident, but do not anticipate filing charges, Balafas said.

The toddler is first child to die from drowning in the town this year, according to Gilbert fire statistics. Two adults have died in drownings in Gilbert this year.

Five children and four other adults have nearly drowned this year, but survived.
