PHOENIX – An 18-month-old boy is in extremely critical condition after being pulled from a pool Monday evening.

Rescue crews were called to the scene near Seventh Avenue and Bell Road around 7 p.m.

Phoenix police said there was a gathering at the home. The child was discovered in the swimming pool, and bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived.

Firefighters were able to get a pulse back while on scene, but said the toddler did not regain consciousness. He was taken to a pediatric facility in “extremely critical” condition, according to a fire department spokesman.

In an update, Phoenix police said the child was breathing on its own at the hospital.
